Fun Things to Do and See in Michigan-Platte River Tube/Canoe Tours

Are you looking for fun things to do and see in Michigan for your entire family?  The Platte River is located about 20 minutes south of the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes in northwest Michigan and is about a 35 minute drive from Traverse City.  Whether you want to take a summertime tubing jaunt down a lazy river or if you want to sit in a canoe and paddle your way through stunning fall foliage, the Platte River has something for you.

There are also kayaks, rafts and paddle boards available for rental near the river.  Both Riverside Canoe Trips and The Honor Trading Post offer complete tour packages of both the Upper and Lower Platte rivers, including vehicle shuttle service.  The best way to relax and enjoy the gentle flow of the river system is to rent a tube and make your way down the Lower Platte.  Trips range from one to two hours in length.  The highlight of the longer trip is found at the end where your tube will float you right out to junction with the spectacular shoreline of Lake Michigan.

For those that prefer a more challenging run, rent a canoe and test your skills on the Upper Platte.  Although the depth of the water is usually 2-3 feet, the river current is noticeably faster and there is about a 50% tip over rate, therefore there are age restrictions for this adventure.  Most canoers can make the trip in about three to four hours.

For those on a budget, you can pack your own lunch, leave it in your vehicle and then sit on the beach at Lake Michigan to enjoy your picnic after your tour.  Both rental services also offer packed lunches and full service party stores with soft drinks, snacks, ice cream, pizza, fishing equipment, sunscreen, floating coolers, water shoes and basically anything you need to fully enjoy your time on the Platte.

There are also local restaurants in nearby Honor, Glen Arbor, Frankfort and Beulah that serve both lunch and dinner.  The Riverside Canoe Trips site provides a generous listing of local accommodations ranging from camping sites to cottage rentals and nearby hotel/motels.

It has been said that Michigan is a water-winter wonderland.  The rich abundance of rivers and lakes that Michigan offers, allows vacationers to create wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.  For more information about the amazing water adventures that are found throughout Michigan, please contact us.
